Wallops Island, Virginia

The Righteous Army of God thundered down the highways, grouped for massed power at the causeways and lesser roads, hit the beaches north and south of Wallops Island Launch Center with beach buggies and tracked vehicles, and sent forty boats and swamp airboats along the canals, waterways, and beaches of the Virginia scientific launch site converted under emergency construction to heavy lift boosters to supply Pegasus. Zack Bible’s storm troopers of the Lord, a motley, beerswilling, coke-jabbing and -smoking band of terrorists in their ultimate element of frenzied rapine and destruction, tore against the hastily-erected barricades thrown up by national guard teams and SWAT units brought in from the surrounding communities. Unlike at Goddard, Bible’s screaming men and women rushed into a heavy opening wave of defensive firepower. More than a thousand of the attackers fell from direct hits or the hard cracking blasts of mortars and recoilless rifles. But at best the defense was more hope than substance. Bible’s troopers were too many and those who survived the initial assault were too crazed to care whether or not they died. They were zombies without real consciousness of self, let alone being capable of reason, even in concern for their own survival. They neither knew nor cared that one out of every three of their number was wounded or killed.

They were also unaware that their hysterical frontal assault was being maneuvered adroitly.

High above the ripping flame and tearing concussions an army air controller studied the scene. He zoomed in to a tight television closeup to a Land Rover racing amidst a group of trucks armed with heavy weapons. “I’ve got him, Big Tree,” he called calmly into his lip mike. “It’s the Land Rover within that bunch of vehicles coming along the Section Four Road. I’ve got that one they’re looking for. Over. ”

‘Eye Sky, you confirm the person of Zack Bible? Big Tree over.”

“Sure looks like the reverend, Big Tree. White suit, gold stripes, standing up, holding a stick or a wand with a light at the end, pushing everybody on. If it ain’t the reverend I don’t know who it is. Over.”

“Ah, roger, Eye Sky. Take him out. Over.”

“Hey, you got it. Eye Sky confirming lethal strike against Target Able.” Jocularity had vanished from the voice above the battle. “Please confirm, over from Eye Sky.”

“Big Tree here. Go get him, ace. You’re cut free. Over and standing by. ”

The A-12 Puma unwound its X-wing, a massive four-bladed rotor that had been locked into place as an un-

moving wing for high speed. Now the wing began to turn and spun faster and faster to translate into a helicopter mode. The Puma swung down in a curving attack and came out level two hundred yards above the Section Four Road leading to the main launch complex at Wallops Island. The Puma came to a dead stop. The pilot-gunner cinched his sealed helmet, kept his view steady in the eyepiece, his fingers moving nimbly amidst the buttons and knobs on the control stick.
